Reduce Your Risk of Stroke by Losing Weight

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide , but that can be avoided by reducing your risk factors. High cholesterol, high blood pressure, and smoking are all major risk factors for stroke. What is another major risk factor for stroke? Obesity. In fact, being overweight is considered one of the primary risk factors for stroke. Therefore, getting your weight under control is an essential piece of lowering your risk of stroke.

How does weight affect the risk of stroke?

According to the World Stroke Organization, being overweight increases your risk of stroke by 22%. But why?

Circulatory system issues are a major cause of stroke. Excess weight puts pressure on your blood flow, reducing the ease of circulation, thus increasing your risk of stroke.

Additionally, the risk of stroke  goes up with other connections to weight. Sleep apnea, diabetes, and hypertension are major stroke risk factors that can also be mitigated with weight loss.

In other words?  Lose weight, lower your risk of stroke.

Harvard Medical says losing as little as 5-10% of your body weight can lower stroke risk factors.

But anyone who has ever tried to lose weight knows it’s not easy to do without support. So, where do you start?

Losing weight with a health coach

A basic internet search for “how do I lose weight” will turn up a bevy of information. Most of it will sound something like this:

  • “Eat less carbs, more protein.”
  • “Don’t drink soda.”
  • “Drink more water.”
  • “Try a whole foods diet.”
  • “Get more exercise.”

Those are all great tips and pieces of advice. But what if you just can’t do it on your own?

It might be time to consider losing weight and lowering your risk of stroke with a health coach.

You may be surprised to hear that working with a health and wellness coach leads you to lose 3x more weight than doing it on your own*.

Regular 1-on-1 coaching sessions allow you to track your progress, discuss new and existing goals, and share all the little victories on your journey to a healthier you.

Profile Plan members often say their health coach becomes part-friend, part-therapist, part-cheerleader. Your relationship with your coach is built on trust, openness, and empathy.

That’s the perfect mix to set you up for weight loss success!

What happens during a one-on-one coaching session with a Profile coach?

It’s important to us that you are comfortable with our health coaching process. Certified Profile health coaches create a safe, trusting environment to be vulnerable and talk openly about your struggles. They offer you support and a non-judgment space to achieve that. Your initial consultation will be a great place to discuss your concerns about your risk of stroke and other health issues.

You will meet with your coach once a week. In between your sessions, your coach will assign you educational videos in your Journey App. In the privacy of your own home, you can track your progress on the Profile Smart Scale, which will measure weight, BMI, body fat, bone mass, and more. The smart scale truly becomes another accountability partner!

Your coach may suggest a 3D Body Scan. The 3D Body Scan is a cool piece of technology that takes your body measurements in a quick, non-invasive way. The scanner will compile a detailed report that will be emailed to you.

At every step of the way along your weight loss journey, your coach will be there for you. For most of our members, coaching was the missing piece of the puzzle.

“I’ve changed the way I look at food and my habits. I won’t ever go back to my old ways of eating. I will keep going forward to keep losing and feeling better and healthier.” —Holly Charlesworth

“Having one-on-one coaching, if you want it, is a big thing. It’s not just the weight loss, it’s going through the stages and keeping it off.” —Chelsea DeBoer

“This is not a fad diet or for a certain type of person. Profile is science and logic-based. It’s personal for each person. It was such a good decision for me to have a mechanism to make changes. I knew what I wanted to do, and this gave me the avenue to do it.” —James Walsh
