Kickstart Your Weight Loss: 30% Off New Memberships!
The weight loss industry is ever evolving. With new diet trends, exercise regimens, and supplements popping up on the regular, it can be pretty overwhelming to know what’s right for you in making sustainable health changes. However, a class of weight loss medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists has shocked the industry with their popularity, effectiveness, and demand. So, how is Profile Plan supporting members who are taking these medications? Read on to get all the details and learn more about how Profile continues their commitment to personalized, science-based weight loss solutions to create sustainable outcomes.
But first, science class in session!
Shortcuts:
GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide 1 which is a hormone produced in our gut. It is released by cells in our intestinal tract after we eat to help lower blood sugar, reduce appetite, and increase feelings of fullness.
Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are a class of drugs originally developed for type 2 diabetes – mimicking the action of the naturally occurring hormone, GLP-1. Today, these medications are being used for weight loss treatment due to their effectiveness in reducing feelings of hunger and increasing feelings of fullness after eating. These drugs also stimulate receptors in our brain that are responsible for appetite regulation, so many users experience less cravings and thoughts of food.
The most common side effects associated with GLP-1RAs are gastrointestinal symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea, which are usually mild and occur in the first few weeks of treatment. It is also important for those taking GLP-1RAs to meet essential nutritional needs to avoid lean muscle mass loss, malnutrition, and dehydration.
In order for a doctor to prescribe these medications, certain criteria must be met – not just the desire to lose a few pounds. GLP-1RAs approved for weight loss may be prescribed to adults with obesity (BMI ≥30) or to some adults who are overweight (BMI ≥ 27) who also have additional medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure.
Clinical studies have shown that these medications can lead to significant weight loss in many people, with an average of 15% body weight loss. However, the weight loss results for GLP-1RAs can vary depending on the individual and long-term treatment is necessary to maintain weight loss outcomes, although the long-term effects of GLP-1RAs are not yet available.
Not exactly. Losing weight and improving health can be a challenging journey. Yet, research has consistently shown that health behavior change is central in weight management. At Profile Plan, we recognize the value of GLP-1RA medications, yet know it is absolutely imperative to pair these drugs with a comprehensive behavioral modification program along with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity to achieve long-term weight management and improve overall health.
Behavior modification strategies, such as goal setting, self-monitoring, and stress management, paired with health coaching, can address many pillars of health while GLP-1RA medication alone may only address changes in body weight. By combining GLP-1RA use in conjunction with a program such as Profile Plan, people looking to lose weight can enhance outcomes, work toward achieving long-term weight management, and improve overall health.
At Profile Plan, we work with each individual member to explore ways in which lifestyle changes are personally meaningful, emphasize how these changes fit in with personal core values, and identify changes that are satisfying to the member. Additionally, our certified health coaches work with members to provide education to help them set goals and apply new knowledge, skills, or behaviors consistently. Planning and practicing new healthy habits, managing stress, eating nutritious foods, and increasing physical activity are components of Profile that can be implemented alongside GLP-1RA medication to obtain sustainable health outcomes.
Yes! Following a diet rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals is important while taking GLP-1RA medications in order to reduce potential side effects and ensure your body is fueled and nourished. At Profile, your coach will work with you to get matched with a custom meal plan to support your goals and your body’s needs. We encourage you to talk with your primary care provider before starting your Profile journey. For more information on plan details, check out our plans page.
Arming members with individualized nutrition and physical activity plans, one-on-one health coaching, behavior changing education, and supporting technology, Profile Plan offers a simple, satisfying, and sustainable approach to weight management, with or without the use of GLP-1RA medication.
